When Should I Have Mold Testing Done?

Published on June 30th, 2017

Combating mold growth means being vigilant for the signs. How can you tell when you need mold growth testing? Just look for a few simple signs!

We’re all familiar with the idea that mold growth has some bad effects on people and animals (here are some specifics), and that left unchecked, mold can cause serious illness. So we all know we should do something about it– the problem is that mold generally grows out of sight. So how do we know we should have mold remediation done in our home or business? How can we tell if we even need testing for mold issues in the first place?

There are a few simple rules that can guide you to answering this question, centered around the signs of mold growth and the conditions that encourage mold to grow: moisture and food (e.g. wood).

Black Spots on Ceilings or Walls

Common household mold is dark in color, and will work its way through drywall as it grows. As a result, a sure sign of mold growth is the appearance of dark spots and splotches on ceilings and walls. Be especially mindful of these spots in rooms that get very humid (e.g. bathrooms), are near water pipes (e.g. kitchen, laundry room), or have walls facing the outdoors (rain leaking in from gaps in the home exterior).

Speaking of Leaks…

Rainfall is one of the most common causes of mold growth. Leaks in your roof, or in exterior walls, let rainfall (or snowmelt) in, which causes the mold spores to bloom. Leaking pipes can do the same, if mold spores have made their way further indoors than the outer walls. If you notice wet areas after a rain, or directly next to or underneath a pipe, you may want to have the area checked for mold.

Timing is Everything

Even with no apparent signs of mold growth, it can be a good idea to have your home tested for mold after an especially rainy season. Especially in Massachusetts, where snowy winters give way to rainy springs and humid summers, effectively giving mold everything it needs to thrive in your walls. There’s a reason why mold remediation is such a sought-after service in New England! Preventative testing can save you health problems in the long run.

Experiencing Symptoms of Mold Infestation

Even if you can’t see signs of mold growth, there are other signals that will alert you to the possibility of mold in your home. Unfortunately these symptoms mean it’s already affecting your health, and you need service ASAP!

Mold growth can trigger allergies in those breathing the musty air. Runny noses, sneezing, coughing, postnasal drip, itchy eyes (or nose, or throat), or watery eyes are all symptoms of mold allergies. If you or anyone in your household experience these symptoms especially severely when at home, it is recommended to have your home tested for mold growth immediately.
